Constructing a small scale Wind Turbine

This experimental project is linked to two ongoing student projects:

  • MSc Arbeit of Zhao Yaqi: Experiments on liquid damping of vibrations of a 3-bladed slender rotor-tower system.
  • MSc semester project of Stefano Pons, Matteo Morara, Enea Zarri and Matteo Colombo: Vibration tests for varying boundary and misalignment conditions of a 3-bladed slender rotor-tower system.

The student teams have constructed a small scale Wind Turbine (WT) in the IBK Lab. The structure will assist in the implementation and verification of structural monitoring and diagnostic methodologies for diagnostics of WT structures.

The main question to be addressed: Can relatively cheap and easily deployable sensors be used to extend the current lifetime and improve the design and operation of existing Wind Turbines?

Non Destructive Evaluation of Bridges for Water proofing

This experimental project is linked to the ongoing MSc Project on "Impact of preventive rehabilitation measures" by Luca Beeler, Matthias Bühler and Marco Baumann.

The project comparatively assessed the efficacy of available NDE schemes (impact echo, vibration-based, thermography and GPR) for detecting waterproofing issues on bridge decks. Two main testing activities are involved:

  • Field Testing on a roadway bridge located in Chur suffering from water proofing issues.
  • Testing of concrete specimens, featuring a waterproofing layer, under controlled laboratory conditions.
